Emerald Revealed as Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year

The Omi Gems office is buzzing with excitement over Pantone’s announcement of the 2013 color of the year: Emerald! We are delighted that this lively and lush hue has been chosen to represent the new year, and will influence the entire world of jewelry and fashion designers, home interiors, makeup and more!

Emerald is, of course, most often associated with brilliant, precious gemstones. The general perception of Emerald is of sophistication and luxury. There’s no wonder that Dorothy and her pals from the Wizard of Oz were in such awe as they viewed the “Emerald City” over the horizon. It is the color of rebirth, renewal and prosperity- no other color conveys growth more than green.

“Green is the most abundant hue in nature – the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. “As it has throughout history, multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world.”

The popularity of green has been steadily rising throughout the past few seasons and especially on the red carpet. Appropriate for any occasion, Emerald’s classic elegance makes for striking and irresistible women’s formal and everyday wear. Emerald also permits great complimentary hue accents, such as peaches, pinks, mauves, ruby reds and deep purples. And gemstones and colored stone jewelry definitely aren’t limited to solely Emeralds! Many stones have beautiful hues of green, such as tsavorite garnet, green sapphire, green tourmaline, peridot and, our favorite, alexandrite. We’re excited to see where this luxurious jewel-like Pantone hue takes us in 2013!

Bi-Color and watermelon tourmaline combine the vividness of emerald green with complementing reddish-rose hues.

Tsavorite garnet is a vivid and lively green!

Alexandrite is an amazing color-change gemstone which is green in natural daylight and an auberguine purple in incandescent light.

Pantone describes Emerald as verdant, prosperous, balanced, energizing, vivid, luminous, renewing, inspiring, sophisticated, radiant, regenerative, healing, classically elegant, lively, positive, unifying, clarity inducing, magnificent, harmonious, lush, powerful, multifaceted, jewel-toned, balanced and universally appealing.
