The Top 5 Reasons to Visit the AGTA GemFair Tucson

As the year winds down, most of us involved with colored gemstones look ahead to our annual return to the Sonoran Desert city of Tucson, Arizona in early February. This vibrant city hosts people from across the globe on their pilgrimage to play a part in the colored gemstone trade. For those of us who attend the AGTA GemFair each year, we look forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new people who have discovered their passion for color. If you haven’t visited Tucson at this time of year before, here are five reasons why you should:

#5 – It is Sunny and Warm in February!
For most people, this time of year is the apex of winter. Whether you have been enduring snow and ice on the plains or constant rain in the Northwest, you could really use a break from it all. WIth rare exception, you can count on sunny skies and warm days in the desert. Enjoy the opportunity to play a round of golf or just soak in the sun while you eat lunch outdoors. It is a great way to recharge your batteries in the middle of winter.

#4 – Ethical dealers
You might be hesitant to do business at a show you have never attended before, but you can be assured that at the AGTA show each and every exhibitor has been vetted for you. Only AGTA members can exhibit at GemFair in the friendly confines of the Tucson Convention Center. What this means to you is that these dealers are bound to a strict set of rules including full disclosure of treatments and demonstrated ethical business practices. And if by chance you do have an issue with a transaction, the AGTA will be there for you to help mediate any concerns to a satisfactory resolution. This peace of mind is a key reason for many buyers to shop only with AGTA members.

#3 – The Tents
The AGTA GemFair is located in the air conditioned, secure Tucson Convention Center, but at the same time there are up to 30 other shows going on throughout the city. Many of these shows are located in white tents on otherwise vacant lots. Inside these tents are vendors from all over the world selling a wide variety of products including rough, gemstones, minerals, crystals, fossils and so much more. It is not uncommon to see full-size dinosaur fossils and huge geodes right next to each other. It is worth one day of your time to hop on the shuttles and explore this bevy of shows around the city – it truly is part of the Tucson experience.

#2 – It is Beneficial to your Business
As margins continue to shrink in the ultra-competitive diamond world, and a younger group of consumers emerges looking for something more interesting, you owe it to the future of your business to explore the opportunities afforded to you in colored gemstones. This is one category in retail where margins are strong and unaffected by the more commoditized diamond market. The AGTA GemFair offers a range of vendors in all price points – there truly is something for everyone under this roof. Take the chance to learn about gemstones you may have never seen before and current market conditions affecting certain segments of the industry. Many opportunities will present themselves as a way to enhance or change the way you do business. The energy is contagious.

#1 – Colored Gemstones
Tucson is the center of the colored gemstone universe for this week every year. Miners and cutters come to market with their newest finds and latest production. You owe it to yourself and your client’s to be on site where all of this activity is happening. You will be able to see in real time what others are buying and selling. You may come across product that will be appreciated by your clients based on the color, quality or price. We expect that anyone coming to Tucson for the first time will be inspired by all that the colored gemstone world has to offer. We never get tired of walking these aisles and seeing what treasures the earth has yielded in the last year.

Omi Gems has been a part of the AGTA GemFair Tucson for over 30 years. It is a market established on trust and quality. We hope that you take advantage of the opportunity to come see us in Tucson in 2018 – you will find us in the front row in booth 401.

Add More Color to Your Life at the AGTA GemFair Booth 401

If you haven’t visited Bill Boyajian’s blog, now is the perfect time. Bill is a renowned industry leader and business guru who is always looking for ways to help jewelers thrive. His most recent blog has some great tips on selling colored gemstones and why you should definitely add more color to your life! We look forward to seeing you all in a few weeks at the AGTA GemFair Tucson, booth 401.

By Bill Boyajian as seen on his Blog:
I work with a lot of jewelers and continue to be surprised and disappointed at the lack of colored gemstone jewelry in their stores. I love colored stones, as do most gemologists. That’s why I can’t understand why more independents, in particular, don’t carry as much colored stone jewelry as they should. With the Tucson Shows starting in early February, here are eight reasons why jewelers should stock and promote colored gemstones:

Loose Rubies1. They’re beautiful. Colored gemstones are attractive and add beauty, mystique, and intrigue to your showcases.

2. They set you apart. Instead of having similar items to everyone else, you will stand out from the crowd with fine colored stone jewelry.

3. They let your knowledge show. Your understanding of colored gems builds confidence with your customers. Your knowledge and education will shine.

4. They appeal to the fashion-forward customer. Your clients want to fit in with the fashions of today. Nothing does this like colored gemstone jewelry.

5. Color works 24/7. Colored gemstones are appropriate for almost any occasion, night or day.

6. History and lore abound. Diamonds have a short history and less lore that the wide variety of colored gemstones. Use this to create wide-ranging curiosity and appeal.

7. Consumers can dress for success. Colored gemstones complement the wearer by adding accent to the color of any dress or outfit.

8. They give you margin. Colored stone jewelry doesn’t lend itself easily to price comparison. You have the ability to add profit to your bottom line.

Colored gemstone jewelry is an opportunity waiting to happen for both store owners and consumers. Acquire the right goods at the upcoming Tucson shows and enjoy greater success in 2016!

Radiant Orchid Announced as Pantone® 2014 Color of the Year!

We’re delighted Pantone has announced the exuberant “Radiant Orchid” as the color of the year for 2014! “An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®.

Blending both cool and warm undertones, purple is an appealing hue for many combinations. So, are you wondering what stones you should design with for 2014? We have a great selection of pink sapphires and purplish-pink spinels, which most accurately convey Radiant Orchid.

It’s also important to know what your customers wearing Radiant Orchid will desire for color-blocking. We feel the multifaceted hue is absolutely seductive when combined with the deep red of rubies, red spinel or garnet.  For those daring to be different, combining with one of 2014’s sister color, Hemlock, is a stunning combination. A summery ornamental green, Hemlock is best portrayed with mint green tourmaline.

Call us at 877.OMI.GEMS or email [email protected] for all of your color orders!

Omi Gems Cheers for Pantone’s 2014 Spring Colors!

Pantone® recently released their Spring 2014 Color Report, revealing soft pastels paired with vivid brights for a colorful equilibrium. Inspired by a mixture of blooming flowers, travels abroad, and strong, confident women, designers are using color to refresh, revive and defy conventional wisdom.

“This season, consumers are looking for a state of thoughtful, emotional and artistic equilibrium,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “…the inherent versatility of the individual colors allows for experimentation with new looks and color combinations.”

Now is the perfect time to work with your clients who love color and give us a call at 877.OMI.GEMS for all of your gemstone needs. Let us know which color is your favorite! You can even take the 2014 Color Survey here and see which color has the lead!

Cayenne, a high-pitched reddish orange, adds a dash of spicy heat to neutrals. Pink tourmaline and many spinels exude “Cayenne” hues.

Radiant Orchid is a perfect companion to pastels and pairs well mixed with other bold colors. Pink sapphire comes in a variety of hues, including “Radiant Orchid” as seen in this cushion cut pink sapphire.

Placid Blue, induces a sense of calmness and tranquility as seen in this radiant cut fancy sapphire. With its clean and clear-blue, cornflower blue sapphire will make its wearer feel the breeze and brilliant shine of calm seas.

Dazzling Blue, a scintillating, polar opposite to Placid Blue, this strong color can be found in sapphires and tanzanite and pairs well across the pallet.

Freesia, an intense yellow, brings powerful energy to the spectrum. Yellow sapphires are the perfect gemstone to elude this sunny hue.

Hemlock, a summery, ornamental green, provides a touch that’s different from the Emerald green of last year. Mint green tourmaline is the perfect hue to carry summer through every season!

Celosia Orange, an optimistic, spontaneous hue can inspire you every day with imperial topaz or mandarin garnet.

Privé Fall Favorites!

by Nicolette Kovacevich, G.G.
Manager of Fine Jewelry, Omi Privé

Autumn marks three of my favorite things: the transition to a new wardrobe (bring on the boots, chunky sweaters, and cozy scarves), the infamous Fall drinks (who can live without pumpkin spiced lattes and chai tea?), and the very best – new jewelry! From light pastels to warm neutral tones, softer colors are everywhere, especially in fine jewelry. I have spotlighted five Omi Privé favorites below. Not only do these accentuate the near transitions to Winter, but each is truly a year-round investment piece.

This ring boasts an 8.66 carat cushion-cut spessartite garnet center. The 18K rose gold setting compliments the gemstone’s rich orange color. Bright and beautiful, this garnet exudes the idyllic tone for Fall, and will add a brilliant “pop” of color to a year-round wardrobe (Style RC1012-SGCU).

Handcrafted in Platinum, these stud earrings feature two round garnets weighing a total of 1.43 carats. The orange spessartite centers are accentuated by the pavé-set diamond halo frames. These studs are stunning, yet effortless, for everyday Fall wear (Style SS1050-SGRD).

The 6.22 carat spessartite garnet in the center of this pendant was mined in Nigeria. It presents optimal color, not reflecting any excess brown or yellow. The Platinum design features a double halo, with small round spessartites set in the inner 18K rose gold frame. White diamonds add contrast, and also emphasize the garnets’ vibrant orange color (Style PC1110-SGPE).

This ring features a 6.72 carat cushion-cut pink tourmaline center. The piece was specially created in 18K rose gold to flawlessly frame the stone, and highlight its hue. The combination is perfect to accentuate Autumn’s warm tones, and the color transitions beautifully to Winter, Spring and Summer (Style RC1230-TPCU).

This 11.11 carat topaz was mined in Ouro Preto, in the state Minas Gerais, Brazil. Its fine golden-yellow hue is known as Imperial color. The stone ideally reflects its trichroism, with its noticeable red shades able to be seen from the sides. To bring out this feature, the 18K rose gold setting was specifically crafted with small round rubies set on both sides bordering its frame (Style RC1450-PTOV).

Which piece is your favorite this Fall?

Perfectly aligned with New York Fashion Week, Pantone has released their Spring 2014 Color Report, revealing soft pastels paired with vivid brights for a colorful equilibrium. Privé’s Most Popular at JCK Jewelry Week

by Nicolette Kovacevich, G.G.
Manager of Fine Jewelry, Omi Privé

After returning from my weeklong “heaven” of jewels and gemstones that is JCK Las Vegas, the Omi Privé team cannot be more thrilled with the positive responses received.   Personally, this show made me realize one thing – I am spoiled.  As a company, we are blessed to source and work with some of the nicest and highest quality gemstones and jewelry in the world.  While it is wonderful to work with such exceptional beauty every day, it would be unfair to state that we do not tend to get accustomed to, and take somewhat for granted, this quality over time.  JCK 2013 served as a reminder for me.

Overall, the show was a great success.  I enjoyed spending time with current and past clients, and forming relationships with new ones! Excitingly, one thing that became very apparent over the course of the show was the multitude of “Oooohhhs” and “Ahhhhhs” received over the Omi Privé jewelry collection.  A great amount of time, energy, and effort was extended from all members of our team in preparation for this show.  Receiving these acclamations was both honoring and humbling.  I would like to recognize a few of the Omi Privé designs that gained the most attention and requests. It seems that these pieces were rarely in the showcase during JCK, as they were out being viewed, filmed, or photographed!

Emerald & Diamond Drop Earrings (EO1011-EMPE) – In the conception of these gorgeous pear-shaped emerald earrings, we set out to create a unique, yet timeless, design that would cradle the stones, and reveal their beauty from all angles.  During the second day of the show, while wearing these earrings, an unknown buyer approached me, turned my face to examine the pair, and exclaimed, “Well, those are truly two pieces of eye candy!”

Ruby & Diamond Necklace (NO1000C-RURD) – 17 ¾ inches of pure beauty, this necklace has been greatly sought after since its completion and hand-delivery in Las Vegas!  Reminiscent of “old Hollywood glamour,” it is a work of art. The necklace features 58 Burmese rubies with 37.04 carats total weight, perfectly matched, as well as over 1,000 diamonds totaling 6.48 carats.

Alexandrite & Diamond Eternity Band (BC1000-ALRD) – One aspect constantly recognized of Omi Privé pieces is the ideal match of all colored gemstones set in each piece. However, even members our own team were amazed and elated by this set of perfectly matched round alexandrites! The eternity band presents 3.34 total carats of fine-quality alexandrites, featuring consistent, excellent color change all the way around.

Pink Sapphire & Diamond Ring (RO1011-PSCU) – Crafting the right ring to ideally feature this 11.24 carat pink sapphire was no easy task. Much time and care were taken in the fabrication of this piece; so much so that the ring actually made its official debut the night before the show in Las Vegas! My facial expression in the picture below explains it all, and has been a consistent reaction had by many upon trying on this One-of-A-Kind pink sapphire ring.

Alexandrite & Diamond Ring (RO1005-ALOV) – This ring may be spotted in a variety of editorials and magazines; however, it never ceases to amaze buyers upon being viewed in person. The center is a 2.69 carat oval Brazilian alexandrite with excellent natural color change. This ring was also one of the Omi Privé pieces featured on JCK-TV this year!

Ruby & Diamond Ring (RS1240-RUCU) – This piece may be smaller than the others at first glance, but its beauty lies within its simplicity. The cathedral design tapers downwards, elegantly featuring the 6.5MM ruby cushion center. This classic style appeals to a variety of customers today.  With brilliant round diamonds set in the body of the ring, this design caught the eyes of many JCK buyers!
